An exhibition of contemporary icons by Greek artists in N.Ireland
Gordon Gallery, Derry, N. Ireland
12 March - 12 April 2008

The Hellenic Foundation for Culture in UK in collaboration with gordon gallery, is bringing together a collection of contemporary icons by some of the leading iconographers and painters
of Greece. The exhibition is presented in Derry, N. Ireland, at gordon gallery and will be officially opened by Dr. Victoria Solomonidis, Minister Counsellor (Cultural Affairs) at the Greek Embassy in London and UK Representative of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, on March 12th 2008.
This is a rare opportunity to view icons made in the Byzantine tradition by members of the Panhellenic Society of Iconographers. Such work has not been seen in Northern Ireland since gordon galleries hosted an exhibition of the work of Sr. Aloysius McVeigh, Sisters of Mercy, Derry in 1993. In addition to traditional icons there will be a number of works from some members of the Panhellenic Society that are paintings. The works from Dimitris Kolioussis (mainly Archangels) painted with oil on wood (old doors) and gold leaf, are of special interest. This is a technique unique to Kolioussis.

The icon differs from Western art in many ways. It is normal for a painting to be recognised by the artist's distinctive style (brushwork, etc.). Iconographers, however, regard their work as a prayer, where style is irrelevant, and where the real author is the Holy Spirit, and so iconographers do not sign their work. They submit their talents in obedience to Holy Tradition and rules, with as much care and accuracy as a medieval monk transcribing the words of Holy Scripture. There is no place for personal interpretation. An icon does not reflect the author's personality: it is a mirror in which the Divine is reflected.
Every element in an icon brings to light a hidden meaning, simple yet profound. Even the basic materials of every icon have multilayered spiritual significance. An illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition. The exhibition will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. -5 p.m., entrance is free and everyone is welcome to see at first hand the amazing work of these Greek iconographers.
